No, no. Not that closet. God knows there’s enough “gay this, gay that” talk in the media these days. Don’t need me talking about it here. No, I’m referring to the hentai closet of course. And how I’m in it. And how you’re probably in it too.
Last week I mentioned how the most common reaction I see to hentai in any face-to-face conversation is people going nuts over how terribly sick and pathetic it supposedly is. In fact I’ve only ever heard otherwise once. However, you and I and millions of other people appear to disagree. The amount of hentai on the net is staggering. The amount in print and on video is equally so. If mankind is just a speck on the fabric of the universe, mankind’s hentai collection is a big, fat, phallus-shaped lump.
So one might think that the concept of enjoying erotic artwork might be somewhat acceptable by now. One might think. Unfortunately, in my experience people thinking is a rare occurrence. In my particular sorrowful case (oh how I weep in my shame), linemarvel and the-guy-who-totally-isn’t-linemarvel-at-all-what-are-you-talking-about remain two completely separate entities.
Conformity rocks, you know? Sure you could stand up for yourself and what you believe in... or you could just smile and nod and finger them behind their back*. It’s not like I’m going to look at hentai in front of them anyways. On the other hand, it’s always that dirty little secret that I have to hide. It’s always that avenue I can’t fully pursue. People always ask why no one has made a quality, sophisticated hentai game. It’s because anyone capable of making that game would be royally screwing over their careers if they did**.
Which is sad. But hey, enough about me, let’s talk about you, shall we?

actually, there are alot of quality hentai games out there, you just have to find them. ofcourse, that depends on what one looks at as "quality". Most games consists of pictures and gifs, and the only moving thing is the text. so whetever a good or bad hentai game these days are mostly based on the story line. but im guessing you think of quality as a real game with quake3 and hl 1/2 graphics? then in that case, yes, its true, people would screw up their careers for doing that
Actually I have stuck up for it to my friends. I see hentai and all activities resulting from it as a release for negative emotion...like smoking or cutting but not as dangerous. Keep up the good work.

For some reason people seem to think hentai is an exception and somehow those things are "games".
It's not a game if it doesn't have gameplay. And no, choosing between dialogue option A and option B isn't gameplay. That's just a "choose your own adventure" graphic novel.

I think a HUGE majority of you people are misssing the point he made about "killing careers" With the obvious exception of Japan.. any artist who decides to completely involve him/herself in an adult project such as a hentai game in the west is practically signing a death warrant for future credibility on other projects..
Why? Because of the whole "must appeal to masses" schtick =P Its pretty much the same how a porn star will pretty much have an incredibly hard time finding a "Real" acting career.. or how "when i was young and did a porn scene" screenies come back and bite modern stars.. the Adult business is a pariah of sorts in the west.. it's seen as a "dirty" thing. And when marketing something to the masses image is pretty much everything.. no one would buy so and so game because "one of the artists involved was involved in porn" *gasp* Yes its stupid but thats how it works in the west.. unlike in Japan where H is seen to be obvious and tolerated.. lots of studios/artists have moved between H and normal relatively easily (ie. Hiroyuki Utatane, Hiroshi Kajiyama, Studio Gainax) over there its quality not background that matters.
Over on our side image and marketability comes first Sure you could make one of the coolest and involving H-game ever done in the west but the fact that it was an adult title will always label you as only suitable for "adult only" projects from then on =/
basically we're so f***ed up ourselves that we must insist that people try to conform. The adult entertainment industry does seem to equal death for anything outside of it.
Unfortunate, but a fact. Until someone decides to stand up.

On topic, I find the best way to get people into hentai is 4chan. Tell them to go on it, because it is a great image hub, then they find the hentai, like it, and you deny going on the hentai boards if they say eew nasty site. Done.

I see porn actors and hentai artists differently; I wouldn't have a porn actor star in an epic movie for me, because they have no real acting experience and are just fancy prostitutes.
But hentai artists are different; They're REAL artists. In porn, a woman simply needs to throw away her self respect and bend over, maybe act out a shallow storyline and make some fake "oohhh ahhh" noises. But hentai artists have to draw hentai, and that DOES take skill, just like any kind of art. It definetely shouldn't kill their career. If anything, it's experience.
Infact, some hentai I've saw can be really good art in general.
But in a way, having a hentai artist draw for a child-friendly game COULD expose the young'ins to his/her -other works-, on the rare chance that they might like the art and check out what else that artist has done.
In that case, the hentai artist wanting to work on child-friendly stuff should use a different alias.
